There are those who choose to cycle because they want to do their part in helping the environment.

And then there are those who choose to cycle because they simply love it. No matter what the reason is for choosing a bicycle, there are some things you should keep in mind before you decide. There is more to choosing the right cycling bicycle than the colors used to paint it! This article is intended to give you a head's up on what you should keep in mind when it's time to buy your bicycle.

The first thing you need to do is try the bicycle on for size, meaning sit on it and make sure that your feet are still flat on the floor so you will be able to stop yourself. Some experts, however, say that this is not a good idea. These experts say in order to have the best cycling experience you can, you should allow for a few inches between the ground and your feet. If your feet are on the ground and your knees are bent when you sit on the seat of the bike, it generally means that the seat is sitting too low for you and too close to the crossbar. Also, if you find that your knees are bent when sitting on the bike, your knees are going to come up too high when you are pedaling your bike.

If you want to ride a road bike, you will need to subtract about nine inches from your inseam measurement. The size of the tires a road bike uses are the reason for this. City riding is done with thin tires, designed to work perfectly with the smooth concrete roads and sidewalks you find in a city. For a mountain bike you will webpage need to take 12" away from your total inseam. This is because the tires of a mountain bike are different than those on a road bike. They are thicker and meant for a rockier terrain. You can always use a mountain bike for city cycling, although this is not how they are best used.

Ask yourself the number of gears necessary for your bike. If you are going to be travelling in relatively flat places, you will not need as many gears as you would need in rockier terrain or a terrain with lots of hills. A bike isn’t better just because it has more gears than another. In actuality, you may never use all the gears. Don’t spend money on something you won’t use. Know how you’ll ride your bike; make sure you have the correct gears for traveling, especially when this is your main mode of transport.

When you get a bike your main goal should be to find one that physically suits you. When deciding upon using a bike for transportation you need to keep this in mind. Safety is important when on a bike but do not overlook comfort, otherwise those long rides will soon grow tiresome.
